Cool and refreshing

When I look at your glassy layer of silk contain the shape of my cup,
I get goose bumps.
After a long day,
I jump into your arms and you re-new me.
When I get home, the feeling of you slipping down my throat is like paradise.
On a hot summer day,
you will embrace me, leaving a smile across my face.
Cold,or warm.
A large amount, or maybe even just a little,
you help me get through my day.
You have the ability to shape shift,
if I leave you trapped in a cool case over night, you will be solid in the morning.
When I look down at you, I see myself.
Your only enemy is the heat,
of which will consume within moments,
devouring you as you sink into it's inhabitants.

Enders game questions 12-15

Ender's Game Questions Chapters 12 - 15

Chapter 12 – Bonzo
1. How did Ender provoke Bonzo?  How did Bonzo respond?
Ender didn’t treat Bonzo with resepct and he beat him at his own game several of times, so Bonzo evetnuslly tried  to kill him.
2. Who was Stilson? Why was Ender thinking of him?
Stilson was the kid that Ender beat to death in the beginning and he was thinking of him because after he killed Bonzo he realized that he was turning in to a killer and he didn’t want to be labeled as that.
3. Why does Ender still expect help from the teachers?
Ender still expects help from the teachers because he knew that he was there big project, and that they still wanted to improve him.
4. Did you know Stilson and Bonzo were dead? Find the specific clues in this chapter about the deaths.
Well because when Ender finished something he was extremely thorough, and afterwards both of them were being extremely nine responsive.
5. Was Ender justified? Why did they not tell him of the deaths?
He was justified that that was they only possible ways for him to get out of the situations that he was in.  They tell him about the deaths because they didn’t want him to see himself as killer and they wanted him to still believe that he innocent.

Chapter 13 – Valentine
1. “Perhaps it is impossible to wear an identity without becoming what you pretend to be.” Explain what this quote means. State an example of this idea.
Well… I think this is saying that’s it’s easy to pretend to be something your not and not adapt they there ways, meaning is easy to act as something you not, but when it comes down to it, the cover may be harder then it looks.
2. Is it a natural, “good” instinct for humans to be killers? (survival of the fittest)
Yes, because if we didn’t have the ability to overcome those who are in our way then we wouldn’t be were we are now.
3. Discuss the conversation between Ender and Valentine on the raft. What does Ender reveal about himself and his enemies?
When Ender and valentine are on the raft, Ender reveals that he wants Peter to love him and he doesn’t want to beat him.
4. Discuss Valentine’s conflicting thoughts about her brothers. How have Peter and Ender’s roles shifted? How does Valentine feel about each?  Valentine has always loved Ender more but now she’s working with Peter.  Now Peter has become the one who is  trying to help people and Ender is becoming the killer.
5. Discuss Graff’s statements about why the war with the Buggers was inevitable.
Well, because they had no way of understanding each other so eventually, they would come to kill each other.
Chapter 14 – Ender’s Teacher
1. What disturbs Ender about Eros? How does Ender figure out the truth about Eros?  Ender wasn’t sure why Eros was built how it was, but eventually Mazer that it was built by the buggers.
2. Describe how Mazer is going to be the only teacher Ender has ever had?
Because he’s the only one that know what he’s doing be acting as Enders enimie.
3. Why had Mazer been dishonest with Ender? Do you think Ender could have
handled the truth?  Mazer was dishonest to Ender because he wanted Ender to do the battles against the buggers without holding back anything.  No, because despite the fact that he was a killer , they wanted him to think of it as not a big deal, because if he had known that he was killing living things he would hold back and wouldn’t be so succeful.
4. Have they pushed the children too far? Was it worth it?
No, I don’t think they pushed the children to far, I think that they trained them to the extant that was reasonable, and would get them through the battles.  Yes it was worth it because in the end they were successful.
5. Is genocide, or in the case of Ender's Game where an entire alien race is
annihilated, xenocide, ever justified? Was the xenocide of the Buggers inevitable? Why? The only justification was the necessity to survive, because in this case, the races would eventually kill each other off.

Chapter 15 – Speaker for the Dead
1. Valentine said, “Nobody controls his own life, Ender. The best you can do is choose to fill the roles given to you by good people, by people who love you.” After what has happened in Ender’s life, what would he think of this statement?
Ender would probably easily to relate to what she said because he was used brutally by Graff and the IF.
2. Ender listens to the evidence about the deaths of Stilson and Bonzo. What is Ender’s opinion about the deaths?
Ender feels like a killer after killing Bonzo and Stilson, but that’s not who wanted to be labeled as, there for his opinion was rather dark and not encouraging.
3. Why did Valentine make sure that Ender could never return to earth?
Because she knew that if ever came back to earth then he would be used to take over the world.
4. What is ironic about Valentine’s statement about Peter saving millions of lives? It’s ironic because peter had always been the one who wanted to hurt the people and was evil, Peter saved millions of lives by preventing the war, but Ender was the one who killed all the buggers, and actually was trying to keep everyone alive.
5. What knowledge did Ender gain the enabled him to write The Hive-Queen? Give specific details.
Well, because the buggers didn’t realize that the humans were each individual life forms and that by killing them they were literally killing off there populations, because the buggers were just one big genetic tool that worked together as a hive, so when the The Hive Queen realized that, the buggers went back to there home planet and decided not to attack, but Ender still lead his fleet to destroy them.
6. Why does Ender publish the book using the pseudonym “Speaker for the Dead” and not his own name?
Ender doesn’t put his name on the book because everything written was from the Queen Bugger’s point of view.  Ender also didn’t want to personify the book or take credit for it because all he really wanted was for people to get the knowledge on what was going on.

Drones Response

Drones are small intelligent aircraft's that can fly up to three miles in the air.  Drones are used for taking pictures from above, spying on people, they are even used assassination.  I honestly think that it is an incredible creation, but I do believe that it's abilities have been taking advantage of.  It is sick how they actually kill people with these tiny aircraft's being controlled by what could be anyone with and controller.  In class we were talking about the law that is patented to be passed which states no fire arms.  It is not far for Obama to band guns and yet allow anyone with three hundred dollars and simple license to fly a drone actually assassinate people.  This law is ridiculous and I have no question but if Obama is going to band guns then drones should be band as well.  I also don't think that it is okay that it only takes about six months to get a license to pilot a drone. Almost anyone has the power to get a license and build a drone, and if a lot of people start to do that then it could affect citizens safety. Overall I think that drones are a great invention and if not taken advantage of and only used for good, then they would be fantastic.

Enders Game video game response

If  I were to design a video game, it would be the most realistic game ever created.  My video game would include every present day design.  There would be no limits.  For some people it would give them a chance to live the life they've craved, only virtually.  My game would be an exact replica of our modern day world.  In the game you would be able to travel, make friends, visit historic land marks.  It would be incredible.  In this game there would be a mission. At the beginning of the game, right after your character was developed, there would be three options, all different.  You would have to fulfill that mission an in order to win the game.  But the mission that you received wouldn't be like, "Go assassinate this person then do this." It would be your destiny, something that you would do to make your character feel satisfied with their life.  The main character of the game would be you, everything seen and done would be from your perspective.  The features of character would be determined over time, it would be based off what you eat, you personality, you friends, and the environment you live in. Pretty much this video game would be would be entirely realistic, but, there would be no limits.

Ender's Game Questions Chapters 9 - 11

Chapter 9 – Locke and Demosthenes
1. There is a real battle, internally and unspoken, between Peter and Valentine. Who is manipulating whom?  Who really has the power?

2.  Look up the names Locke and Demothenes, how do these philosophers relate to the personas of Peter and Valentine?

3. Why is Ender still angry?

Chapter 10 – Dragon
1. What kind of leader was Ender?  Why was he this kind of leader?

2. What did Ender do to Bean, and why?

3. What does the word Salaam mean?  What could this tell you about the power of religious identity?

4. What is important about the end of this chapter?  Was Ender’s reaction a mistake by the Battle School teachers, or was it the reaction they wanted?

Chapter 11 – Veni Vidi Vici
1. How does the computer know Ender so well?  Does it really?

2. Explain this quote: “Yes. That’s the worst that could happen. I can’t lose any games. Because if I lose any--” (page 198)

3. Why are the teachers pushing Ender so hard?
I think that the reason that the teachers are pushing Ender so hard is because they expect him to be a leader, and they don't want to be OK with the world ending.

4. Discuss the importance of the last two sentences of the chapter.
The last two sentences of the chapter are, "He thought of a half a dozen ideas before he went to sleep. Ender would be pleased---every one of them was stupid."  I think that this is important because they're depending on Bean to come up with ideas that are interesting, yet logical, and because there are better soldiers then him he doesn't want to let them down and so he needs to prove himself.

5. “Veni vidi vici” means, “I came; I saw; I conquered.”  Why is this an appropriate chapter title?

CEJ #2

Noa Reinman 2-6-13

Federal Scientists have written a 400 page essay for the dams along the klamath river to be removed.  These scientists have convinced authorities that it is a logical thing to do.   By doing this it will increase the salmon population and bring more revenue in for local fish farms.   Authorities have predicted that this will be about a 1$ billion project.  It has been recorded to be the biggest dam removal in US history.  It stated in the article that the percentage of the salmon population in the Klamath river has dropped over 90 percent due to; overfishing, poor water quality,  and habitat loss.   Although the sediment that has been built up behind the dam for several years has killed off a large percentage of chinook and Coho salmon, they plan to benefit the others, (Salmon, Steelhead, and lamprey) by opening up over 420 miles of habitat blocked.  This project is planned to take action in 2020, and is estimated to increase fish population overall be 80 percent!

I think that this is an exceptional plan and I do hope that they are successful.  Where we live is one of the few places that salmon exist, and I think that it’s important that we provide a safe and healthy habitat for them to live in.  Although I do think that we should have taken action on this earlier it’s still ideal that we start now.  What I’m wondering is how long it’s going to take for the fish population increase, and if we will be quick enough to redeem their existence before they die off once and for all.

Chapter 1 – Third
1. What attitude motivates the adults to lie to Ender?

Well, I think that when they lied to Ender it was for the greater good, and I don't think that they wanted to tell Ender the truth because then he might not want to go to battle school. If Ender didn't choose to attend battle school then it could get them in trouble the government since Ender is a third.

2. Explain what it seems to mean for Ender to be born a "Third". Show whether this is
a negative or positive fact to:
- his parents,
- his brother, Peter,
- his sister, Valentine, and
- his classmates.
Enders parents: I don't think his parents were necessarily mad that they were assigned to have a third child, but they did have to give up certain things that they weren't to happy about.

Peter: I think that Enders older brother Peter is mad about it at all because it gives him more reasons to bully Ender with out Ender having a reasonable argument, but I definitely think that his happy that Ender was the chosen child to attend Battler school.

Valentine:  Although Valentine loves Ender, I don't think she's exactly happy about him being a Third because now he has to attend Battle school.

Enders classmates:  I think that Enders classmates definitely have a different impression on him now, because he was always bullied and they never thought he would be capable of attending something like Battle school.

Chapter 2 – Peter
1. Was Peter joking when he threatened Ender and Valentine?  Support your answer
with evidence from the novel.

I think that Peter wasn't joking when he threatened Ender and Valentine.  The reason I think this is because it seems like he got kind of nervous and backed away when Valentine told him what she would do.

2. Why is Peter’s behavior at the end of the chapter so completely different from the
rest of the chapter?

I think that towards the end of the chapter Peter realizes that Ender was chosen and not him so he tries to redeem himself acting like a mature older brother when Graff is there.

3. How do you feel about each of these characters (Ender, Valentine, Peter)?  What
did the author do to help create these feelings?  Give examples.

I think that Ender is just kind of a cool layed back character.  I think that the author tries to describe him as tough but shy and witty and the same time.  Like when he beats up Stilson it shows that he's tough, and when he gets home it sort of shows his shy and witty side.  I think that Valentine represents the soft graces older sister who's always there for Ender and defending him in certian situations. For example, when Ender leaves to Battle school Valentine is very sad and probably cares the most in the family, along with on Enders birthday she celebrates it by herself in there backyard.  Peter is the tough older brother who is always bullying Valentine and Ender, like when he threatens to kill them.

Chapter 3 – Graff
1. What did Graff mean about evolution working against girls?

I think that Graff means that if woman were to fight the buggers then families would be left and babies would stop being produced, therefor slowing down evolution and eventually ending it once and for all.

2. Ender is leaving to learn how to fight a war, yet he takes Graff’s hand. Why does
Orson Scott Card (OSC) include this action?

I think that this action is included because to show that Ender is still human, meaning that he still had the ability to show emotion and that even though his going it still is going to be tough and he is nervous.

Chapter 4 – Launch
1. Explain the meaning of the following statement: “Individual human beings are tools
that the others use to help us all survive.”

I think that this means that i's there destiny to fight and it is what was meant to happen with there live.  That in order to keep evolution going there must be those who help it happen.

2. Explain the following quote: "Isolate him enough that he remains creative -
otherwise he'll adopt the system here and we'll lose him." Your answer should
include the terms: isolation, creative, adopt, lose.

3. Did Ender mean to break the other boy’s arm?  What does this incident tell us about
Ender?  Is it acceptable to do despicable things for survival?  Why or why not?

Chapter 5 – Games
1. Ender works hard to express his feelings in private and not show homesickness in
front of any other person. Is it healthy for him or not?   What is positive and what is
negative about showing feelings?  What is positive and what is negative about not
showing feelings?

2. How did Ender beat Bernard?  Is this an unusual solution to his problem?

3. List the different coping mechanisms (ways of dealing with difficulties) Ender
shows. For each one describe whether the overall result of each is helpful or
harmful to Ender

Anti-7-Eleven Activists Hosting Bodega Tour to Support Local Shops:

EAST VILLAGE — A walking tour to support local bodegas marks the latest tactic for a group of fed-up East Village residents in their battle against the influx of 7-Eleven chain stores in their neighborhood.
The "No 7-Eleven" movement will host the walk this Saturday starting at midday and visit a handful of character-filled bodegas, such as Ray's Candy Store on Avenue A, to learn what makes each shop and operator unique.  The movement has gained traction over the past few weeks, with residents chalking anti-7-Eleven slogans on sidewalks, creating a Twitter account and even earning international media coverage.
"Now is the time that we need to discuss how important bodegas are to our neighborhood identity," said Bowery Poetry Club founder Bob Holman, who will lead the tour with fellow poet Eileen Myles. "We are going to pay tribute to the people — the center of the universe for our neighborhood."
An anti-7-Eleven forum held at the beginning of the month drew about 40 people, including Holman, with the group brainstorming ideas to keep the neighborhood largely free from chain stores.
A spokeswoman for 7-Eleven, Margaret Chabris, said the chain has 32 locations in Manhattan and plans to open a total of 100 within the next five years. She added that almost every location is a franchise and often has a local owner.
The "No 7-Eleven" tour will begin outside what has become a focal point for the new movement — Avenue A and East 11th Street, where 7-Eleven's newest outpost is set to open in the coming weeks.
"It is a kind of cultural activism," Myles said. "I thought of the Tenement Museum [on the Lower East Side] and how they do it, and this is a way to highlight our living history."
Each bodega is different and often stocks products appealing to local residents, Myles explained. This is something that will be emphasized in the tour, with the end goal of increasing business at the bodegas, she said.
"It is a ceremony to say that they are there and we appreciate them," Myles added.
Under the poetic guidance of both Myles and Holman — who coined the term “Pringle-izing" to describe the 7-Eleven effect on the city's unique neighborhoods — the tour will pay homage to bodegas that have become de-facto community centers.
"I came to this country and this is the only thing I know how to do," said Mike Ahal, 47, a Palestinian immigrant who owns Poppy's Gourmet Corner on Avenue A and East 12th Street.
His deli will be one of the stops on Saturday's tour.
"It is personal. They [customers] come here because they feel comfortable," said Ahal, who studied industrial engineering but never ventured into the field.
"My neighbor upstairs, if he doesn't have 50 cents, he gives it to me later," he said. "That wouldn’t happen at a 7-Eleven."

This newspaper article is all about a small town in California called East Village.  The local residents of this town are organizing an “No 7-eleven” protest to band seven eleven from their neighborhood, hoping to eventually make the word go viral and band 7- eleven once and for all.  The reason that they are doing this is because several local residents have come to the conclusion that they want to support their local businesses rather than big corporations supporting the banks government.  Some of the localist did some research and found that there is not one 7-eleven even ran by a local citizen, therefore they are practically giving their money to the government.  I definitely agree with their reasoning, but a lot of people who are less fortunate can't afford the  local produce, and depend on places like that to survive, and feed their families, so banding seven eleven may be good for the wealthier people, but for the others it is a fatal movement.  On the other hand, I am curious to know how the government is going to react to this, along with other big corporations such as Costco, and Walmart.  If this protest is successful then other big corporations are going to be brought down as wel,l do too influenced rebellions.
